Craps Etiquette Basics

By September 17, 2020 No Comments

Craps is one of the oldest casino games and my personal favorite. If you take a look at the past, dice roll played significant role in history. Many countries were conquered, too many heads cut off and a great number of lovers united on an outcome of a single shooting of a dice. Either metaphorically speaking, or literally. But let us put my poetic nature aside and focus on the game itself. Craps etiquette basics are interesting to know, especially if you are playing in land-based casinos. Craps etiquette is important. Knowing the game rules is crucial. In that respect, we invite you to read some of the previous posts dedicated to Craps. Today, let’s explore the basic rules of behavior together.

Do’s and Don’ts of Placing the Bets

There are many etiquette rules that relate to Craps and all the movement at the table. However, we will mention those we find the most important here.

When placing a bet, make sure to do it while the dice are in the middle of the table. This means that you must not wait until the Stickperson sends out the dice the shooter. Why? Because those late bets are usually proposition bets and once they are made, the chips (or the cheque) will be thrown on the table and make a mess. In this situation, it is difficult for the dealer to keep track of the bets.

The way you place your bet is important as well. It is a good practice to set the wager gently on the table and state it. Any kind of throwing the wagers is not recommended. It slows down the game and the dealers like their tables to be neat.

As for the type of bets anyone would recommend, we have selected the following:

  • Pass Line Bets when you are betting that a shooter will land the 7 or 11 before a 2, 3 or 12 on the “come-out roll”.
  • The reverse version of the Pass Line bet, called Don’t Pass Line bet. You win if the shooter lands 2 or 3.
  • Come bet that allows you to bet on a 7 or 11 outcome before the come point (here you should wait first for the come point to be set.)
  • Don’t Come bet is reversed Come bet. With this bet, you are hoping for the outcome of 2 or 3 before 7 or 11, while 12 is a tie.

Many Craps professionals advise to restrain yourself from placing the so-called “crazy crapper” bets. Stick to the mathematically proven ones instead. There are too many crazy bets and they can bear too much of a risk. Unless you are a risk-taking person, that is.

Do’s and Don’ts of the Behavior at the Table

As in many other situations in life, showing your respect for others is important at the table as well. You can allow yourself to be angry, or thrilled, but we advise you to keep your cool. Clapping is allowed, for example. However, the good etiquette says that a physical contact, patting on the back, getting too close to someone and similar behavior is not recommended.

All this can make you nervous if you have entered a land-based casino for the first time. Nevertheless, you will get the grip of it quickly. Just observe the others and follow their lead.

As for handling the dice, there are few simple Craps etiquette rules. First of all, shooting the dice in Craps is a one-hand-roll. This means that you should not flip your dice from one hand to another.

Next, you should know how to handle the dice when throwing. Avoid shooting it too strong. As many gamblers say, you actually “toss” the dice. So, do it smoothly.

Lastly, the game forbids taking the dice off the table away from the eyesight of others. If this happens, the casino staff (the dealer, the boxman) can request the dice for inspection.
