There’s nothing quite like fight night at Mexico. This long-standing venue in Central Mexico City is the place to see one of the country’s most raucous and dramatic sporting events, Lucha Libre.

In Spanish, it means literally freestyle wrestling, and this is Mexico’s version of professional wrestling, eclipsed in popularity by soccer. The wearing of the masks has developed special significance and made this pop-culture phenomenon unique.

Lucha Libre origins date back to 1863 when Mexican wrestler, Enrique Ugartechea, first developed the art of “free-style” wrestling based on Greco-Roman traditions. In 1933 Salvador Lutteroth Gonzalez, “the father of Lucha Libre“ established the Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre. All the rest is history.

A typical match involves the “good guys”, battling it out against the “bad guys”, with an incredible array of dropkicks, backflips and leg locks. At the end of the fight, the loser must remove their mask and thereby reveal their identity.
