Online Dating — Threat or Blessings?

By September 12, 20224 Comments

We have all heard so many stories about online dating – some good, some not-so-good. The recent Netflix documentary Tinder Swindler has really shocked us all. Many of you have probably experienced dating people you’ve met online. But because of the stigma around it, you cannot always talk about it. There are still couples out there who will lie to their family and friends about how they met because they are too embarrassed to tell them that they met on a dating site. Even though it opens many opportunities for meeting new people, online dating can be dangerous. There are many pros and cons to online dating, and we are going to discuss them in this post.

History of Online Dating

Since online dating has become the second-most popular way to connect with someone, we are taking a look back at the history of it.

With the popularity of internet, the first modern dating website Match appeared back in 1995. The site matched users based on answers to a wide variety of questionnaires. This site is considered to be the pioneer in the internet dating industry. What’s the most interesting thing about it, it has earned over 100,000 users in its first six months.

Following the success of Match, a psychologist Neil Clark Warren launched another site named eHarmony. He wanted to match people through scientific methods in which applicants find a partner based on 32 aspects of compatibility. This one was also using a lengthy questionnaire of about 150 questions and normally, wasn’t very efficient as todays apps.

After 2000, the real revolution of online dating happened with the appearance of OkCupid in 2004, Facebook in 2005 and finally Tinder in 2012. Believe it or not, 2022 marks the 10-year anniversary of Tinder with 6.2 million subscribers and 75 million monthly active users! And Tinder is not the only screen people are staring at. In 2022, there are hundreds of dating apps.

Online Dating – Treat or Blessing?

No doubt online dating stands bad in the media in general and on social media because they focus on the weirdos and the perverts. People are also sharing their dating app nightmares – catfishes and creeps which make you want to delete the app. That’s probably the reason many people are scared of it.

However, some people simply prefer to meet someone the traditional way and fall in love just like in many love stories. But we are not all the same. Many people are shy and online dating is better option for them. This shouldn’t be a taboo – it is not embarrassing to be on a dating app. There have been many relationships and marriages that came out of online dating.

Love them or hate them, online dating platforms are here and by the looks of things, they’re not going anywhere. That being said, we can’t really say whether they are a blessing or a treat because it all depends on one’s experience. But what we fail to remember is that, just like any other tool, it’s how you use it. What is the main advantage of it is that you are in control as to whom you choose to meet in person. In the end, isn’t it great that you can meet (or flirt) with different people without having to go out of your pajamas?

I had been talking to this guy for 4 or 5 months and we finally got together at a hotel. He showed up sloppy drunk, belligerent and high, so he had all the energy in the world to keep the yuck going all night. As I was debating on whether to suffer through it or not he starts telling racist jokes, which coincidentally is pretty much all my profile says about me, i don’t like hate, prejudice, cruelty, bullying etc. Play nice. Idiot move right? Yeah so it was time for him to leave. He was not happy that nothing had happened and didn’t see his fault in this at all. So he took a picture of my license plate when he left then send me multiple texts all night describing how he was going to torture and kill my dog Rey. That was 5 years ago. He’s still the number one stalker harassing me. Be careful people.
