The Origin of Playing Cards

By Lifestyle No Comments

Playing cards have a radical transformation since their first beginnings several centuries ago. Cards deck like we know today making a journey that took hundreds of years and involved traveling through many countries. In fact, the most significant elements of today’s deck were produced by different cultures and countries.

First References on the East

Many researchers agree that playing cards may have been invented during the Tang dynasty in China around the 9th century AD. First written reference describes Princess Tongchang playing the “leaf game” with the family of her husband. With woodblock technology, they enjoyed the game and made wagers on who would win. The “leaf game” involved nine cards where players could stake metal currency to win.

By the 11th century, playing cards were spreading throughout the Asian continent and later came into Egypt. The oldest surviving cards in the world are dated to the 12th and 13th centuries, which was known as the early Mamluk period.  These are four fragments found in the Keir Collection and one in the Benaki Museum.

A near-complete pack of Mamluk playing cards dating to the 15th century. It was set composed of three different packs, probably to replace missing cards. These cards had an abstract design not depicting persons.

Mass Production of Cards

The printing press developed by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440 helped push the popularity of playing cards with mass-produced decks. However, gambling was seen as an amoral activity. But, it didn’t affect its popularity. In this period the cards deck changed its design and number of cards. The French deck was the first to include an Ace, King, and Queen, a Jack or Knight. European playing cards made their way back to the East through trade by ships.

In the United States Joker first appeared into the deck. It was devised for the game known as Euchre. The name of the cars is believed to derive from juker, a variant name for euchre.

The first known instance of mass-produced packs was known as the Infirerra form Spain in 1693. The design of these eventually became standard by the 1700s. A print created by Samuel Hart in 1864, known as the Saladee’s Patent, became the most common card design.

Today the standard is the 52-card deck with Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades. It is using for table games, from Poker and Blackjack to Baccarat or Three-Card Rummy.

Generation of the eighties

What Happened with the Generation of the Eighties?

By Lifestyle No Comments

We can often hear comments about people born in the 80ies that they are narcissistic, selfish, unable to focus, lazy. Their families and employers do not know how to deal with them. They ask for top notch working conditions and are never fully satisfied. Why? We gave this topic a bit of thinking and have come up with certain conclusions on what happened with the generation of the eighties.

Technology

There are basically two key aspects when we consider the influence of technology: creating fake images and the chemistry behind it.

The psychologists say that people who do not use social media are far less prone to depression. And the generation of the eighties lives online. Depression comes from creating fake images on Facebook, Instagram, etc. and high expectations developed as a result of living in this fake world. Nowadays, people strive for ultimate beauty, money, comfortable life. Instagram displays the results of someone’s work and efforts. However, it never shows the actual work behind it. Therefore, it creates the fake impression that all things nice can fall from the sky with little or no effort at all.

Secondly, it has been proved that big number of likes on social media stimulate creation of dopamine in the brain. Dopamin is the stuff that makes you happy. It is the same hormone that increases when people smoke, for example. Although it is biologically induced, it puts us on a wrong track. This chemical reaction is misleading because it takes the focus away from the real world. Fewer people use social media wisely today.

Environment

It is not strange that people who are so immersed in technology and online world have difficulties in creating and maintaining relationships in real life.

Most of the relationships the generation of the eighties creates later in life are superficial. They often claim that they are aware the friendships do not last. They party together and have fun, until something better comes along. Why? Because many people do not have the experience of actually practicing and developing social skills.

Furthermore, the lack of social skills eventually leads to inability to deal with stress. Man is a human being. Each of us is biologically predisposed to live in company of others, to be social. Discrepancy between our nature and the way of life enforced on us by the factors mentioned above, creates stress.

Impatience

Inability to fight stress and create long-term relationships inevitably leads to a certain stage when a person feels he or she has had enough. At one point, we may feel we want it all, and we want it now. And the best part of it is that we actually get everything instantly, which closes the vicious circle. Impatience is an intriguing feature.

We are living in an instant world where we can fulfill many of our desires very quickly. Almost anything is just a click away.  Except for human relationships. This is the field where we need to work hard to create the fulfilling bond.  The question is whether we are ready to do that, equipped with Instagram pics as our ideals and TED talks as the ultimate source of knowledge.

Do not get us wrong, we love millennials. We are actually those people who are constantly striving for higher meaning and ways to change the world. However, we are also aware of our weaker side. Maybe we should learn to recognize one another to be able to join forces, instead of focusing on quick, media-induced impressions of the life that will never become reality.

ways to start brainstorming

Ways to Start Brainstorming

By Lifestyle No Comments

,,I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t.” –Thomas Edison

House, M.D. and his team going crazy over various symptoms written on a white board are among my favorite brainstorming scenes.  Although fictional, depiction of brainstorming in this tv show is probably the closest to its original idea developed by Alex Faickney Osborn. It is swift, non-judgmental (or at least subject to witty, but fast-paced comments), it embraces diversity and some very strange conclusions. The following are just a few ways to start brainstorming.

What is Brainstorming

Brainstorming is not the only type of storm we can benefit from. However, it is by far the most pleasant and fulfilling. I did not give it much of a thought before I reached a certain age. Exchanging ideas in early years was simply that – exchanging ideas. And then we learnt about the phenomenon called “brainstorming”. Our lives changed.

Brainstorming can make your life easier, especially if you are a team player. Even if you are not, brainstorming can help out in solving some issues. There are many situations in life when two heads are smarter than one. We should all take advantage of this fact and ask for advice or different opinion, whenever possible. Brainstorming became a must in many industries nowadays, not just in creative ones. This phenomenon carries the knowledge and ideas sharing in its essence.

Ways to Start Brainstorming

Relying on quantity as a pre-requisite – the advocates of brainstorming claim that there is rarely quality without quantity. The more ideas we all bring to the table, the better the chances of finding that special solution to our problems.

Accepting strange ideas – when we are dealing with great number of ideas, there is no way to avoid completely strange ones, or even outrages and seemingly irrelevant ideas. However, brainstorming is teaching us that we should open our minds to different opinions. This is one of the best aspects of brainstorming. It can widen our horizons and force us to look at the same picture from a different angle.

Restraining from criticism – since wild and unusual ideas are welcome, one of the main rules teaches us not to criticize them. Learning to accept different possibilities is beneficial. Have you ever tried to unsuccessfully solve a problem in your life doing the same thing over and over again? I know I have. Sometimes I managed eventually, others I failed. The point is that I could have saved some time and efforts if I have only been able to put another perspective on the issue.

Combining ideas – there is no brainstorming without teamwork. If you are smart enough to recognize when you need help and brave enough to try something different, the result is inevitable. What is also great about combining ideas is that you get to practice the associative way of thinking that engages brain cells and boosts brain capacity.
