San Francisco Honors Greta Thunberg

By Lifestyle No Comments

If you woke up in San Francisco, you may have noticed the massive mural of Greta Thunberg on Mason Street, near Union Square. You may be one of the persons who do not know who Greta is. Since her face will be looking at passersby in one of the most beautiful cities in the USA, it is time to get acquainted. The news is that San Francisco honors Greta Thunberg. And Cobre is the artist behind the artwork.

Who is Greta Thunberg?

Greta Thunberg is a young environmental activist from Sweden. And she is much more than that. Greta started the wave of protests to regulate global climate. She has already made enormous impact. However, it seems that her messages are reaching young people across the globe more easily than they reach people who actually make decisions. Nevertheless, she has gone where only few activists her age have gone. The latest in her public speeches happened at the UN headquarters in NY.

Greta is a 16-year-old Swedish national, who got interested in climate change at the very young age.  The media reported about how her concerns influenced her health and led her to give up on consuming meat, for example. That was just the first step.

“It felt like I was the only one who cared about the climate and the ecological crisis. My parents didn’t care about it, my classmates didn’t care about it, my relatives didn’t care about this. I mean nobody I knew cared about this and I felt like I was the only one.”

Soon afterwards, Greta Thunberg fell into depression and stopped attending school. Protesting against climate change in front of the Swedish parliament was just the beginning of her fight. This was also the way to ease her mind and gain strength. Later on, she organized the school strike with many of her peers across the country joining her.

Today, she has a massive support. More than 1.5 million people joined her cause and protested in the streets recently.

Her Message

Greta Thunberg is one of the activists who is consistent in her fight. She lives what she preaches. Therefore, we can see her sailing across the ocean at the moment, instead of hopping on a plain and travel to distant places.

She talks to politicians and the audience using very severe and direct approach.  This young lady is raising questions and is on a mission to make everyone aware of the climate change. She explores the solutions to our planet’s problems and advocates their application as soon as possible.

Currently, she claims that the main issue with climate is to be able to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. Reducing emissions is the first step humanity has to take in order to survive, according to Greta.

Ms. Thunberg had one more important message to convey to the Americans upon her recent visit. She reportedly said:

“Even if the politics needed doesn’t exist today, we still need to use our voices to make sure that the people in power are focused on the right things. Because this is a democracy, and in a democracy, people are the ones who run the country. I know it doesn’t seem that way, but if enough people were to decide they have had enough, then that could change everything. So, don’t underestimate that power.”

What is your stand on climate change and activism of this kind?

History of gambling

A Brief History of Gambling

By Lifestyle No Comments

Gambling is as old as mankind. In ancient times, people used to look at the skies and ask for a bit of luck, rain, destiny prediction, or higher knowledge about the stars. Gambling, in its various forms, has always been connected with divine nature. People perceived it as the fine interaction between an individual and luck. Luck, as the abstract, divine force played a major role. A brief history of gambling is closely related to both mathematics and the spiritual world.

Ancient Gods & Dice Games

In ancient Egypt, people used to play the game called “Senet”, which was very similar to some of the board games today. During a game, a player had a task to pass the path of his entire life. This was depicted by moving pawns on the board. Although no dice had been used, the Egyptians used sticks. The movement of pawns on the board depended on the combination of faces portrayed on the sticks. Or, should we say – it depended on luck and throwing skills.

History of gambling recorded the story of Thoth. He was the God of writing, wisdom, magic and the moon in ancient Egypt. He was also known for gambling. Namely, he played the game of throwing a dice and competed against the Moon. Eventually, he won, earning 5 additional days to help the sky goddess Nut to deliver children.

Nezha was the Chinese god often associated with gambling. This mythical creature was one of the rare creatures that was brought back to life. The force that helped his revival was based on prayers of the mortals. The legend says that people invoked him, partially due to his ability to help with revealing the winning numbers in lottery.

Chinese also had their own versions of board games similar to the Egyptian ones. The same goes for ancient Greeks and Romans. From betting on animal fights, gladiator combat, to casting lots, people living in ancient times engaged in games that would determine the events that were about to take place.

The Greeks Playing with Numbers

We should also keep in mind that ancient Greeks, for example, had a very deep knowledge of mathematics, and that they liked to play with numbers. Nevertheless, it is a bit strange to think that they were thrilled to play the game of luck, hoping for the winning number combination to pop up. It is strange, because at the time, they have already had extensive experience in “playing” with the numbers and calculus. Some of the conclusions they came up with, we still use today.

What would the history of gambling be without ancient myths. There is an interesting Greek myth mentioning shooting of the dice. Furthermore, it is at the basis of one of the greatest Greek myths. Namely, Zeus, Hades and Poseidon were said to shoot dice in order to see how the entire Universe would be divided among them. Zeus won and he chose the heavens, with thunders as his main weapon.  This virtual event formed the basis of the order of gods and semi-gods in the Greek mythology temple. Having gambling at the heart of such an important event in mythology should send us some messages. Could one of those truths be that gambling is the inseparable part of our nature and we should simply accept it as it is?

4-day workweek

Microsoft Promoted 4-Day Workweek

By News & more No Comments

Not too many companies have expressed willingness to make workweek a day shorter. Those that did, achieved tremendous results. It was fascinating to see that Microsoft Promoted 4-day workweek in none other country than Japan! Whether this trend will become dominant in years to come, we are yet to see. However, things appear to be changing for the better in some parts of the world, to both workers’ and employers’ satisfaction.

The Japan Experiment

Back in July this year, Microsoft reportedly conducted a sort of an experiment in its Japan office with 2,300 employees. Namely, the company introduced 4-day workweek allowing workers to have Friday and weekends as days off. The idea came from the founder of New Zealand company, Perpetual Garden, Mr. Andrew Barnes. This company switched permanently to 4-day workweek last year, as it proved to be beneficial.

The results in Microsoft were quite measurable. Reportedly, the company recorded 40% increase in productivity when comparing with the same period a year before. They concluded that shorter workweek motivates employees to work harder and complete tasks. Special motivation comes from knowing they would recharge in the following 3 days. That way, days off come as a reward.

Moreover, Microsoft noted that with shorter workweek, the electricity costs are lower by 23%. Simultaneously, the Japanese printed 60% less paper documents during the experiment. Most importantly, 92% of employees reported they were happy with 4-day workweek.

Microsoft has purportedly announced another round of experiments that should take place during this winter. This time, they would explore other ways to make work more flexible and rate the productivity later on.

What’s the Story in the USA?

The workers in America officially work the longest hours in the world. The 40-hour workday was a standard set a long time ago. Paradoxically, the Americans appear to be working longer hours today in spite of tech development. There are less tasks that we do manually today. Nevertheless, we work longer than before.  Almost half of workers in the US work overtime. We should also be aware that there are many situations when working long hours is not paid properly.

Software companies are among the rare ones that apply flexibility in many forms. Whether it’s flexible working hours, or other benefits, such as health care package, unlimited vacation policy , work from home, or higher salaries, or all of this combined, their employees are usually satisfied. It has been estimated that nearly one third of companies worldwide are offering the mentioned benefits to their employees. Apparently, they have experienced better productivity that way.

Aiming for higher productivity, lower costs and less time spent in the working process still appears to be a fairy tale for many employers. However, the voices that advocate shorter workweek are becoming stronger. The whole point of tech application is to make our lives easier and more fruitful. The trends in various tech fields all have one thing in common – to make any kind of process quicker, almost instant, while providing reliable results. If our civilization has achieved such developmental stage that we can afford this on micro level, testing it globally would be the next step.

The question that inevitably comes to everyone’s mind is: why the country with one of the greatest industries in the world cannot afford the reform of this kind?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Starting your day

Starting Your Day The Right Way

By Lifestyle No Comments

Snooze until… forever. That’s the first morning thought many people have. Being a morning person is a great plus. It makes a life easier. However, many of us do not like getting up early in the morning. Since we have to do it, we need to find the way to make it less stressful. Starting your day the right way means setting your mood to energetic level and this is something we all need.

Your Morning Rituals

Morning rituals are basically peaceful moments to treat yourself with. The professionals say that this is what adds structure to your day. Apparently, people can benefit from repetitive actions because they seem familiar, and therefore provide the sense of security. Once your mind believes that everything is ok, you will have no difficulties switching to other more complex tasks during the day.

Morning rituals are providing the basis for whatever comes your way during that day.  It can be the way you like to drink your coffee in the morning, or the way you stretch and do your exercise, or the way you cuddle. Whatever makes you happy and calm. Starting your day the right way is a prerequisite for a successful day.

Your Private Quiet Moments

Peace and quiet is beyond compare when it comes to eliminating stress. These moments should provide for self-reflection or positive affirmations, depending on your needs. Personally, positive affirmations are not my thing. However, I found that reflecting on my own choices and decisions is a powerful thing. Somehow it reminds an individual that he or she is a responsible being. Additionally, self-reflection can make us become better persons.

Quiet moments can include a prayer as well, or meditation, or any other kind of focusing in order to balance your mind and your soul.

Reading your favorite quotes is also recommendable. Reading can engage all of your senses. Especially if you have a favorite text that speaks to you alone and puts you to a certain positive mood. One of the best things about reading is that it pushes the mental boundaries and sparks imagination. Once that creative spark is on, the possibilities of what a person can do are limitless.

Your Music-Filled Moments

Apart from reducing stress and improving your mood, music can do much more. It is no coincidence that ancient Greeks have considered music to be of heavenly origin and tried to find the mathematical base for the existing sounds. Music influences us in many ways.

One of the greatest benefits of music is that it improves endurance and performance.  And what better way to start your day than with your favorite sounds? Moreover, the research of Brunnel University has shown that average people can benefit far more from music than professional athletes, for example.

Namely, the ideal tempo for workout music is approximately between 125 and 140 beats per minute. This frequency synchronizes body movements to music and can lead to increased stamina, but only in low to moderate intensity exercise.

Therefore, turn up the bass, and make your morning routine less boring while boosting your energy. We wish you a wonderful week ahead!

We would love to hear about your interesting morning routines, in case you wish to share them.

Living longer

Living Longer Is Possible

By Lifestyle No Comments

We will not talk about healthy eating habits and avoiding cigarettes. You already know that you should exercise and do regular checkups in order to stay healthy. Nevertheless, we thought about the unconventional aspects that contribute to longer life. Living longer is possible if you embrace these priorities.

Social Interaction as the Ultimate Cure

Strangely, not too many doctors will tell you that social interaction is equally important as medications they prescribe. The impact that your bonds with family and friends have on your well-being is beyond measure.

A human being is meant to live as part of the collective. This need is in our nature. Even in prehistory, people used to organize living in groups. This was a practical decision. Living that way made their lives easier. They were stronger together while hunting or defending from enemies. The group would not allow the weaker members to suffer. On the other hand, each individual would live for and in a group.

We secluded ourselves from that joint way of living a long time ago. Individualism has taken over big time. However, innate drives die hard.  Even the recent studies show that strong human interaction can increase the survival rate by 50%.  Do you know what this means? You can exercise as much as you like, but you will hardly reach the same benefit as when socializing. Your behind may be tighter, or your biceps stronger, but the chances of living longer will not prevail in comparison to social interaction.  According to an article in Time Magazine, a person would need to exercise 1,500 minutes a week, or more than 3 hours a day (!) to lower the risk of death by 46%.

Eventually, it is up to you to decide whether to exercise, or spend quality time with family and friends, or both, if possible. We just wanted to draw your attention to the fact that we often forget the benefits of socializing. There is basically no other way to lift your spirits when you are down, or sick than to have a shoulder to rely on.

Always Have a Goal

When we strive for something, we persevere. Regardless of the obstacles, we continue going because we have a purpose.

Setting a goal in life does not have to be a difficult thing to do. Moreover, setting smaller goals is something many psychologists recommend. That way, the goals are achievable. Furthermore, those achievements can boost a person’s confidence and give wings to carry you to another endeavor.

Some research has shown that people who set goals in life are less likely to experience any type of brain damage, or to experience disability. Even the patients suffering from some of the most difficult diseases find strength in belief.

Belief or fate is a subject that science still does not tackle. We have witnessed to some of the tremendous innovations that facilitate human lives. People have started 3D printing organs. Nevertheless, we remain silent about the most valuable force within ourselves. While approaching the holidays, we leave you with this simple thought:

living longer is possible if you decide that this is your goal. Your thoughts, your relationships, your beliefs and your doings have consequences. And the more open-minded and positive you are to the world around you, the better the results.
