1st place

In today’s age, it is very easy to find the negative in things and let that be the focus. I am grateful I have running water, safe food, electricity, and most importantly family. We are all very blessed to be Americans as are many other countries around the world. Cheers !!!  Brady

2nd place

This is a hard question to answer, because right now I feel our country can be so politically divided with the whole dems vs reps. The division makes me sick because I don’t think any subject is black and white, and can always have compromises made. I’m also not happy about how we treat those seeking refugee or Americans that are immigrants or our racism and more…

However, when I think of American pride, I think of my grandparents that immigrated from Malta, Canada, Ireland, and Scotland. I think about my grandpa who was a Detroit Fireman and raised during the Depression so he taught us to to reuse everything and fix anything broken. He taught me that the Americans Dream isn’t about having a fancy home and expensive car, but rather simply having opportunities. In many ways I won a jackpot being born American because we have so many opportunities and things given to us easily that others struggle for that are basic human necessities of life.

What I wish everyone remembered today and this week is that America is beautiful because it is a Melting Pot. We are a big pot of stew that you can taste each ingredient; you can be your heritage AND have American heritage. I am a “mutt” and love living where I can get authentic cuisine of every type of ethnic food easily. I can learn traditions and celebrate holidays from the whole world’s cultures simply because I am in America. It is never boring and it is always enriching.

My great grandparents came from Malta and my great Grandma said: “Don’t speak anything but English in this house so I can learn it.” So my Grandpa never taught us much Maltese and I wish he would have. But I get to share homemade pastizzi and baked macaroni with the long noodles with friends and coworkers. I get to share a hard work ethic from learning it from my grandparents that seized the opportunities. I get to have the freedom to be American today, Maltese today, Scottish today, Irish today. I can be whatever religion or gender or sexuality I want. I might still get prejudiced for my differences,

but by law I am Free. Caitlin

The Fourth of July means so much to me. I am so proud to be an American. Being a Texan, we take our patriotism very serious. I feel some people forget how great it is to be one. We take it for granted but America is the greatest country. I’ve been to other countries and from what I’ve seen I’ll never take it for granted. I joined the Marines and fought in Iraq and Afghanistan so this day means a lot to me. It means freedom, sacrifice, and hope. Another Independence Day is here, and we cannot but think about the opportunities and advantages of being an American. We have received quite a pile of comments on the subject from our dear players and although these are diverse in style, details and motifs, there is one thing that connects them all: freedom. Apparently, freedom is the ultimate value among Americans. By “freedom” we mean the freedom of choice and the opportunity to achieve your goals. The same concept appears in the Declaration of Independence, which the Founding Fathers left as part of the all-American heritage.

Independence Day and the American Dream

The God-given rights described in the Declaration of Independence are actually opportunities that people later started referring to as the American Dream. The roots to the meaning of the American Dream, we can trace back to the beginning of the 20th century. Namely, historian James Truslow Adams used the term in his best-selling book “Epic of America”, published in 1931. He said: “…that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.”

Advantage Over Other Countries

America is, without a doubt, dominant country in the world. We are not referring to the politics itself, but to all other aspects that can shape the opportunities for the people to live abundant lives. The very fact it is, in a way, secluded from other continents puts it in a special category and gives it a certain strategic advantage.

America also features many nations and diverse cultures. The mixture of many different heritage values converging into one makes it unique. This is especially visible if we take a look at how many people from different origin countries came to the US and succeeded. Many of them brought a specific mindset or a skill. Remember Sergei Brin, one of the few people behind Google, whose parents emigrated from the Soviet Union? Differences among people and constructive debates give birth to ideas. Subsequently, ideas evolve into practice and the advancement is inevitable.

Lastly, America is rich in natural resources. There is enough oil, as well as land not to let anyone be hungry. The same resources generate income, making economies run.

Chasing American Dream Today

The question of all questions is what chasing American dream means today. Although people are constantly being reminded of equality, liberty, pursuit of happiness, we cannot overlook the fact that many things revolve around money. Equality is measured by income and living standard. Freedom is also deeply connected with money, although it may not be visible at first sight. The freedom to live your life any way you want to is in a direct connection with how much money you have at your disposal.

However, everyone is equal in opportunities. America is the country of great opportunities. Apparently, it is all up to an individual whether he will grasp it and succeed in landing financial foundation for living whichever way he wants. Opportunities are truly something to be proud of.

Downside of It All

There are no downsides to this story. Downside of it all could possibly be the same thing we all love: the money. The underlying factor of freedom and equality. It makes a life easier. Money can secure good living and safety. However, sometimes it masks the true values.

Thankfully, people are bound to recall the core values every now and then. It is very important to remember, however idealistic it sounds today, that once J.T. Adams (author of “Epic of America”) wrote the following when describing the relationship between an employer and his foreign worker:

“…Such a relationship was the great difference between America and his homeland. ‘There, ‘he said, ‘I would do my work and might get a pleasant word, but I could never sit and talk like this. There is a difference there between social grades which cannot be got over. I would not talk to you there as man to man, but as my employer.’”

America has always truly been a completely new world and we hope it will continue to be so.

We decided to dedicate this post to the best three stories honoring fathers which you wrote during last week within Father’s Day Promotion. Everything we got from you was very intimate and heartbreaking, but we have to choose three to be rewarded stories. Read them below.

1st place

The father that most impacted my life is my husband… watching my husband of 17 years raise my children as if they were his own. My husband worked 12-16 hour days sometimes 6-7 days a week to take care of his instant family… and may i say he did it with heart, pride, a firm hand, and more love than if those two babies were his own… he was at every game, play, book fair, Christmas pageant, dr. appointment, etc….. and yet still managed to be the bread winner. My ex was a horrible, abusive man and has never seen his children (now 19 & 22) and my husband never missed a beat taking on his new role. We were not blessed with a child together, we tried and after the devastation of losing one at the insistence of our dr. I had a full hysterectomy so his chances of ever having one of his own were gone. And as the years have gone by (some faster than others) I realized what could have been… what kind of people my children would be today, what kind of husband and father my son would eventually come to be, what kind of husband my daughter would settle for if not for the man who not only saved me, but saved my children. Say “I love you PA” while you can. Regret is a burden that we may carry for the rest of our lives. Many of us are too shy to say Iloveyou to our parents, but when the time comes that they are gone, that’s when we realize how important they are to us. Like almost everyone else, I grew up with an enormous fear of my father, he is very strict when it comes to my studies, and my gender preference, so while growing up I always avoid him, even small talks or conversation, I have my excuses always. So he went overseas and worked there for many years, almost half of my life I would say, he was then supporting me with my needs financially eventhough I stopped studying in college when he calls, I apways told him that I need to pay something for school but I spend the money with my leisures and vices (drinking bar hopping & other things a dropped out college does) I didnt know at that time that he knew the truth as he had one of our neighbors watch over me and my siblings while he’s abroad, but still he’s been sending me money for whatever reason I tell him, then after 15yrs he came home, showed his hands to me and I was surprised he cried and stated “you know what, this hands of mine are aching with the cold weather but still I do shovel tons of snow just to earn money and send it to you, eventhough ai know your fooling around, I waited for you to tell me the truth, but you didn’t, what I do hope in my life is for you to finish your studies so in the future when im gone, you can get a better job to support yourself ” I didn’t know that he was sick and diagnosed with cancer at that time, but seing him cry pinched my heart and what I did was I studied hard for him, but a month before my graduation, he died, im devastated as I wasn’t able to show him as I climb up the stage and get my college diploma, and the saddest part, he died on my actual bday, so since then for 12yrs now, everytime my birthday comes, tears are overflowing from my eyes as I reminisce and wonder what would it be like when my pop is still here? 🙁 Angeline Mariano
